Went to see The Movie for the first time...

Well. As I went there expected something like the last few, it was better than I expected. Still, the movie is nothing to rave about. Some actors still can't act, and the movie was almost sickeningly saccherine at times...and so true to JKR's "bad Slyths/good Gryffs" philosophy...

And who the FUCK dressed them all in muggle clothing the majority of the time?! 'twasn't even nice Muggle clothing, might I add.

Rickman's acting was lovely. He ought to have had more part in the movie.

And there was this one point in which I screamed out, "JACK! I'M FLYING!" and everyone around cracked up becuase it fit so, so well...and I haven't even seen Titanic, ironically enough.

There were some points in the movie that I preferred to the book, but that's because JKR doesn't know how to write.

...sad to say, I usually talk about something for a long time, but I didn't love this movie (no Oscars, please?), nor did I hate it, so, well, that's about it.

...but I must add as a postnote that that huge clock, although it appeared completely out of nowhere, was SO COOL. I have a thing for clocks.

To Be Supplanted

hi, sorry to spam you, but I read this rarelitslash fic by you ages ago and it's stuck in my mind.

As I am (a) a mythology nut and (b) paradoxically ignorant, could you walk me through your references? As I say in my comment here (http://www.livejournal.com/community/rarelitslash/25790.html), I certainly got Selene and Endymion but the rest I vaguely know/am not sure of :D

This fic has been up in my Rarelitslash Recs ages though :D

*laughs* Sure! Anything to help another mythology fan. (Especially one that likes my fics...^_^)

The first ref to Selene and Endymion is correct, of course. I took a bit of artistic liscence (which may have been what confused you) and merged the myths of Eos and Selene. I'd saw it done in one book I'd read, so I presumed that if you were going to recognise Selene from the Endymion ref. (and all the Moon references), then you'd be able to guess at the next few parts...thus the references to the crickets () and the 'curse' (the one where Eos/Selene is cursed to always be lusting after young boys).

The nymph is of no importance, and the second girl is Artemis - the whole description part, the reference to her arrows (the whole 'Artemis' arrows strike like the moonlight' metaphor) and the "She had many names, now, just as she had been promised, and a lofty title." line is a reference to Artemis' request to be known by many names.

The second one...

Well, the speaker is Helios, the Sun-god. Most people mistakenly assume that Apollo, the god of Light is the Sun; that is, of course, the whole point of the story.

The person he's speaking to, Apollo, is identified by the reference to "Python's blood" (the Python Apollo killed at Delphi to avenge Leto and win the oracle) and "usurper of titles" (by that, Helios means that Apollo is known as the god of a great deal of things which he does not actually do, (Music for one, thus the reference to the Muses) including also the incorrect idea that he is the Sun, which he is, of course, not).

Helios' "crown" is mentioned in Phaeton's story - namely the point that Phaeton could not look at the Sun straight on until the Sun removed his shining crown.

The reference to Titans in both stories is that the Helios/Selene twin pair are the children of Titans (Hyperion and...Tethys, I think?) while the Apollo/Artemis twins are Olympian.

Again, the arrow reference is to Apollo's arrows (which are 'harsh like the rays of the sun').

Hope that helps!
