Aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! I. Am. An. Idiot. A complete and utter idiot.
Allow me to explain.
This is what happened last night:
It's fairly late at night, or early in the morning if you look at it a different way, and I've been awake playing around for quite a bit and I know I'll be exhausted tomorrow if I don't sleep soon. So I get ready to go to bed, but decided to read another few pages in the book I'm trying to get through.
Unfortunately for me, I happen to be right in the climax of the stupid book, so I get into it and the next time I look up, it was almost 4 in the morning, and I'm due to wake up early. And, to top it off, I am no longer in the LEAST tired.
*grumbles*
And to top it off, I'm extremely unhappy with the book.
I have finally fought my way, tooth and nail, through 'The Book of Athyra'. Which means both 'Athyra' and 'Orca'.
Now, I already knew that Morrolan wasn't appearing, and that was okay. Athyra went down just fine; I managed to avoid any particularly annoying things in.
Orca is one of the worst books I have ever read in my life. And I'm counting the original Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' which would find it's best use, in my opinion, as a doormat if it wasn't so big. As it is, it's best used as FIREWOOD. Orca is right up there with it.
First, the most obvious problem.
I liked Sethra. I liked Kiera. I do NOT like Sethra=Kiera! It completely erases the personalities each of them orginally had! Sethra is a cool character...sorry, was a cool character...because she seems so remote and in control. She does not say things like "I'm an idiot". Ever. It completely ruins her character. Kiera, now, is a cool character because she's a female character who can be relied upon to say stuff like that...but she is NOT Sethra-like in the least! That's the point!
*scowling* Damnit, I actually liked Sethra a lot! This is so completely annoying...
Next problem. The plot sucked. I mean, really sucked. It was confusing (even for a diehard fan of intriuge and the little useless aspects of politcking such as myself), made very little sense, and even if I missed something because I was reading it at 3 in the morning, I am not going to pick the bloody book up again if you pay me. (Actually, I can be bribed, but it'll cost you dear!)
The ending was completely unsatisfying and made little sense. It's almost as if the author looked at the page count, said "Hey, I've made enough pages for the book to go out on sale, I'll just snap everything done here so I don't have to write any more.", and did just that. So, Savn goes home 'for his own good', Sethra is Kiera and no one cares, Timmer is suddenly taking care of the sneeze-named-old-lady so we don't have to worry about her, everything is working as it should and they're not going to use that information any more even though you could (and Sethra should have KNOWN it, for gods sake, she's older than the Empire! If she doesn't have enough time to figure out the workings of it, she shouldn't be alive any longer!), Sethra was "given away" for the absolutely most ridiculous reasons EVER...
What was the point of this book, if not to tell us about Sethra=Kiera, Vlad Norathaur (in some little obscure way), get rid of Savn, and...wait, there isn't any other point to the book. Nothing was achieved, nothing was learned! NO POINT!
I'm all for simple endings; I don't mind that it was all resolved by talking to Timmer, but for gods sake it makes no sense! None! Nada!
*scowl* I can't believe I stayed up to read that.
Allow me to explain.
