Went to see "Tale of Two Cities" - VERY good musical. Not the best I've ever seen, but very, very nice! The scenes and acting was lovely and the singing was over-all one of the best casts I've seen in a long time.

It helps that they decided to make it a Les Mis musical - in the sense that almost the entire cast acted in a version of Les Mis (no, seriously - there were 3 Enjolras, 4 Thenardier, a Javert, an Eponine, and at least one Valjean. And the married couple which produced this? Met each other acting as Marius and Cosette on Broadway.)

So it's remarkably even-handed about the revolution considering that, well, they're doing something by Dickens. But seriously, for something by Dickens, it's really, really, REALLY nice. It makes you cry towards the end. Seriously, everyone was wiping their eyes as they left the theatre, but in a very good way.

Also, Sydney Carton? Grantaire, except - if possible - even more cynical, drunk, and huggable. And still has a thing for blondes. The Mary Sue, um, I mean, Lucie is actually a pretty good singer for the main female lead, and they keep her relatively quiet. Ernest Defarge (a former Enjolras, and you can so tell) is wonderful. There's this great scene when the National Guard is attacking a bunch of poor people right before the storming of the Bastille, and there's a song in which about halfway through, half of the National Guard defects to the side of the poor people. It's awesome.

A lot fewer grand ensemble songs than normal for a musical, but it's not a bad thing; the solos are all very cute. And Sydney and Charles Danby really do resemble each other, and they're both absolutely adorable - you know it's a good musical when there are the main character doesn't get the girl, but you agree with it because the secondary character was just as cute.

Also, they snark throughout this! It's hilarious, really absolutely hilarious.

Absolutely lovely musical, but not advertised enough. I advise everyone to come to NYC as soon as possible to see it, or send people who are in the area to it. Or else it may get shut down and that'll really, really suck because it's one of the best things on Broadway since Les Mis stopped running.
